Vanadinite is an important ore of vanadium (V) and a minor source of the lead (Pb). Vanadinite usually forms where lead minerals are oxidized (as secondary mineral), often in areas with an arid climate. It is commonly associated with the oxidation of galena.

Baryte is typically found as thick to thin tabular or bladed crystals, usually in clusters with the crystals growing parallel to one another, or nearly so. It receives its name from the Greek word 'barys' which means 'heavy'. This name is in response to barite’s high specific gravity of 4.5, which is exceptional for a nonmetallic mineral.

Some of the white baryte is coated with dark grey manganese oxides.
